What is Persuasive Writing?

Persuasive writing uses logic and reason to demonstrate that one idea is more genuine than another. It seeks to persuade the reader to adopt a particular point of view or to perform a specific action. The argument must always use strong reasoning and solid proof by stating facts, providing logical arguments, offering instances, and referencing experts.

  1. Pick good word choice: The main goal of a persuasive essay is to persuade your audience of the perspective you are trying to convey. Using descriptive word choice can help the audience see your point of view. Some examples are wordplay, such as puns, rhymes and jokes. This can aid the audience to understand your central arguments.

  2. Research both sides: This allows the reader to have different perspectives. This also provides a wider scope of material to cover when you go to your conclusion. An effective way to do this is in your final paragraph, you can provide counterarguments to the opposing point of view.

  3. Proofread: In order to make sure your essay is solid, it is important to constantly edit your essay and make sure you have solid arguments. It also adds to the credibility of your article if you don't have any spelling or grammar errors. Some ways of doing this effectively are by asking your peers or parents to proofread your essay before submitting it.

  4. Build trust with the reader: It's very important that your audience views you as a viable and credible source. One way of conveying this is to write with authority by including quotes from experts on the topic, reliable sources, and using detailed examples explaining your point of view. Alternatively, you need to also not talk down to your audience by being too serious because this can come off as condescending. It is important to seek a balance between writing with authority, but also not taking down your audience.

  5. Have a well-structured introduction: The introduction is the most important part of an essay because it introduces the reader to your subject and supporting arguments. In order for it to be effective, it is important to choose a relevant and engaging hook introducing your topic. It is also important to add some brief background knowledge involving your topic. And finally, clearly present your main arguments for each paragraph in your thesis statement and be clear about where you stand on your topic.
